Seven years ago, just like many families welcoming a new baby, we hired our first helper through a maid agency in Singapore. Since then, we've worked with four helpers and engaged three different agencies, encountering numerous frustrations that we’d like to share with you:

• Hefty Placement Fees or Loans: Although these costs didn’t directly add to our expenses, they meant our helpers worked 6-8 months without receiving a salary. This practice felt deeply unfair and burdensome for them.
• Deceptive Pricing Structures: We paid agency fees, only to be hit with additional charges like documentation and biodata fees—costs we assumed were already included. Agencies claimed transparency but masked costs in various ways, leaving us feeling misled and overcharged.
• Lack of Protection or Refunds: When one of our helpers needed to return home due to family issues just two months into her contract, the agency refused to refund our prepaid placement fees.
